Spring-Loaded Butt Contacts Provide for Thousands of Consistent and Reliable Connections
MELTRIC Hazardous Location Multipin plugs and receptacles use spring-loaded, butt-style contacts similar to those used on contactors and switchgear. Their end-to-end mating provides a stable connection, and the spring-loading delivers optimal contact pressure, ensuring that the integrity of the electrical connection is maintained over thousands of operations.

Silver and Silver-Nickel Contacts Provide Superior Conductivity
MELTRIC Multipin device contacts have solid silver-nickel contact surfaces to ensure long-term electrical performance. The contacts’ 85% silver and 15% nickel composition combines the durability of nickel with the excellent conducting properties of silver. Silver-nickel contacts provide significant advantages over the brass materials used on most other types of plgs and receptacles.
Silver and silver-nickel maintain low contact resistance and superior electrical properties even after oxidation and tarnishing.
The hardness of nickel gives the silver-nickel contacts excellent wear resistance.
Silver-nickel performs well in and withstands wet and corrosive environments.
The combination of silver/silver-nickel contacts with a spring-loaded butt-style design makes MELTRIC Multipin contacts ideal for maintaining consistently reliable connections under repeated use.
Limitations of Brass as a Contact Material
Brass is a soft material and wears rapidly, degrading the operational characteristics of the contact.
Brass oxidizes easily, preventing it from performing well in wet or corrosive environments.
The contact resistance of brass increases rapidly due to tarnishing that occurs during normal use.
PXN12c receptacles include a special screw locking pawl that allows the lid to be screw locked in the closed position to avoid the unintended connection of a plug. A special tool (provided with the device) is required to lock and unlock the pawl.
DXN25c and DXN37c devices include lockout provisions on the receptacle that allow the lid to be locked in the closed position to prevent the insertion of a plug. This is accomplished by latching the lid closed and inserting either a 5/16” diameter lock or available locking pin in the circular opening through the pawl. The snug fit of the locking pin blocks the pawl from operating. Various sizes of locks and lockout hasps can be used with the locking pin to complete the lockout.
The lockout provision on the DXN25c and DXN37c receptacles can also be used to lock the plug and receptacle together when connected. This can be an important consideration in public or other critical areas where it is important to prevent unauthorized disconnections.
MELTRIC hazardous location multipin plugs and receptacles achieve their rated watertightness simply by connecting the plug and receptacle. There is no need to thread on or engage additional watertightness rings as is required on many other devices. PXN12c devices provide IP65/IP66 protection and DXN25c and DXN37c devices provide IP66/IP67 protection.
Conductors may be terminated into Meltric hazardous location multipin contacts by crimping or by soldering. In either case, the work is done easily outside of the device as the contacts are not inserted into the device until the termination is complete.
PXN12c devices are provided with 13 contacts, DXN25c’s with 26 contacts and DXN37c’s with 39 contacts. Users need to terminate and install only the number that is required. Unused contacts may be kept as spares.
Contacts may be removed and re-inserted up to three times if user requirements change. A special tool is available and required to properly remove the contacts. Assembly and disassembly is illustrated above.
