Specification Guide
Specifiers Information
The following product specification information is provided to help specifiers incorporate MELTRIC devices into construction plans. Each specification item should be reviewed carefully to ensure that project requirements are met. Cut and paste appropriate text to spec documents as required.
Specifications for DSN and DS Series Switch-Rated Plugs and Receptacles
Quick spec for MELTRIC Switch Rated Plugs & Receptacles
Note to specifying engineer: For a simple means of specifying MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles, we recommend including the following text into job specifications.
- Plugs and receptacles must be listed to UL 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles.' (Alternate for Canada: Plugs and receptacles must be CSA listed to UL 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles').
Detailed spec for Switch-Rated Plugs & Receptacles
Note to specifying engineer: In order to specify MELTRIC Switch-Rated Series plugs and receptacles, include one or all of the items below in your job specification. The items in bold are exclusive to Switch-Rated plugs & receptacles and thus should be included in the specification wherever practical to avoid substitution of pin and sleeve or twist type devices.
- Plugs and receptacles must be listed to UL 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles.' (Alternate for Canada: Plugs and receptacles must be CSA listed to UL 2682 'Switch Rated Plugs and Receptacles').
- Plugs and receptacles must have constant pressure butt-contacts with solid silver-nickel tips. Pin and sleeve contacts are not permitted.
- Receptacles must have dead front construction: live parts must be inaccessible to thin tool or wire.
- Plugs and receptacles rated 100A and below must be able to close at least once into a conditional short-circuit current of up to 65,000A when protected by an RK1 fuse sized no greater than 400% of the highest full load motor current associated with the device. Plugs and receptacles rated higher than 100A shall be able to close into a short-circuit with available fault current of 10,000A when protected by an RK1 fuse sized no greater than 400% of the highest full load motor current associated with the device.
- Plugs and receptacles must incorporate an integral switching mechanism to ensure the load is broken before the plug is removed from the receptacle.
- Plug and receptacle wire terminals must be spring-assisted to prevent loosening due to conductor yielding, shocks, vibrations or thermal cycling.
- The minimum environmental rating of plugs and receptacles must be Type 3R (DS Series), Type 4X and IP66/IP67/IP69k (DSN Series).
- Ingress protection must be achieved automatically when the plug is fully inserted into the receptacles, without additional manual operation.
- Plugs and receptacles must have a system of different keying positions in order to discriminate between circuits or incompatible operating voltages or frequencies.
- Plugs and receptacles installed outdoors must be able to withstand UV radiation.
- Plugs and receptacles shall be MELTRIC Switch-Rated Series or equal.
Specifications for DXN Hazardous Location Plugs and Receptacles
Note to specifying engineer: In order to specify MELTRIC DXN Hazardous Duty plugs and receptacles, include one or all of the items below in your job specification.
- Plugs and receptacles shall be UL or CSA rated for Class I Division 2 Group A, B, C, D and Class II Division 2 Group E, F, G environments.
- Plugs and receptacles shall be rated to ATEX II 2 G/D DUST T85 EEx ed IIC T6.
- The minimum environmental rating of plugs and receptacles must be IP66/IP67. Ingress Protection must be achieved automatically when the plug is fully inserted into the receptacles, without any additional manual operation.
- Receptacles shall have a dead front, live parts must be inaccessible to a thin tool or wire.
- Plugs and receptacles shall have constant pressure butt-contacts with solid silver-nickel contact tips. Pin and sleeve contacts are not permitted.
- Plugs and receptacles shall be able to safely connect and disconnect equipment under full load in potentially explosive environments.
- Hazardous duty rated plugs and receptacles shall be MELTRIC DXN Series or equal.
Specifications for PF/PFQ High Amperage Plugs and Receptacles
Note to specifying engineer: In order to specify MELTRIC PF/PFQ High Amperage plugs and receptacles, include one or all of the items below in your job specification.
- Plugs and receptacles must be MELTRIC PF/PFQ Series or equal.
- Plugs and receptacles must have constant pressure type silver contacts. Pin and sleeve contacts are not permitted.
- Receptacles must have a safety shutter to protect female contacts and inhibit access to live parts.
- The minimum environmental rating of plugs and receptacles must be IP66/IP67.
- Ingress protection must be achieved automatically when the plug is fully inserted into the receptacles, without additional manual operation (except DB Series).
- Plug and receptacles must feature a mechanical locking system that engages pilot contacts and subsequently energizes the plug. Furthermore, the plug can not be removed from the receptacles without releasing the mechanical lock and thus disengaging the pilot contacts which must be electrically interlocked via a pilot control circuit.
- Plug and receptacle casing must be epoxy coated aluminum material.
