Franklin, Wis. — As part of our ongoing commitment to electrical safety, and in recognition of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week—October 7-13—MELTRIC is releasing two new resource documents.

An updated version of the MELTRIC Electrical Safety Guide and a new white paper, Promoting Electrical Safety through NFPA 70E Standard Adherence, are now available on the MELTRIC website. Both documents focus on the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace and promote adherence to the standard as a key factor in preventing electrical accidents, injuries and fires, and in establishing safe electrical practices.

NFPA data indicates that industrial and manufacturing fires have decreased more than 65 percent during the last three decades. Despite this positive trend, more than 37,000 industrial and manufacturing fires still occur annually. These disasters cause on average, 16 fatalities, 273 injuries, and more than $1 billion in property damage.

Ranking as the primary cause of these fires, and averaging more than
$142 million in damages alone, are electrical distribution and lighting equipment—faulty, misused, or accidental contact with wiring, transformers, power supplies, lamps, bulbs, lighting, cords, and plugs.

While it may be impossible to eliminate every electrical fire or accident, establishing and adhering to sound electrical practices makes a huge impact on the overall health and safety of employees and the financial success of a business. This is why the NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace is so important.

The NFPA 70E Standard is used by OSHA and the judicial system as the measuring stick for electrical compliance in the workplace. It helps employers establish electrical safety programs, including policies, procedures, and program controls, to reduce electrical risk. The standard plays a pivotal role in reducing workplace electrical injuries, deaths, accidents, and fires.
