Unlike MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles, most standard pin & sleeve devices are not intended to be connected or disconnected under load. Because of that, they must be used in connection with a wall mounted interlock switch to prevent connection or disconnection under load.
The interlock switch, however, can only affect the connection made at the wall box; it cannot control what happens at the end of the cord, so users connecting or disconnecting pin & sleeve extension cords under load may be exposed to arcing and the potential injury hazards it poses.
